Sanders’ critical judgement on migration show that he thinks people should stay settled. By staying settled, people have a chance to make a “home for [themselves].”

Sanders uses words that create a negative connotation to exaggerate how great moving is in order to show that the idea is absurd. He says that people believe that if they stay in one place “[they’ll] die.” Death, of course, causes a drastic order of events because if a person doesn’t move, he isn’t going to die. He then moves on to say that Americans are “drunk on driving.” Sanders says this to show that people just want to get up and go all the time. Later in his passage, he uses historical issues to show that bad has come out of migrating. One of these is how when the “colonist” came they brought “slavery with them.” They also brought “small pox” and “Norway rats.” This shows that migrating doesn’t always bring happiness.

In the beginning, Sanders uses parallel phrases to describe American migraters. He describes them as “rainbow-chasers [and] explorers.” Explorers always want to find something new, such as “a new stream.” Explorers are never happy with what’s “under [their] feet.” Because Sanders describes Americans as “rainbow-chasers,” he is insinuating that what they are searching for is kind of absurd because it’s hard to find. In the end, Sanders juxtaposes ideas that contradict each other. He does this to prove that migrating is not better than staying put.

Sanders argues with the fact that migrating is better than being rooted. He thinks that people are in better shape if they are rooted “in places” instead of in “ideas.”

Another reason abstinence-only sex-ed should not be taught is that teaching abstinence is up to the parents. According to The Heritage Foundation, “47% of parents want [their] teens to be taught” abstinence until after marriage. (The Heritage Foundation) The results of this survey also says that 32% of parents want their teens to be taught to wait until after their high school years. If parents want a strong abstinence message, then they should be the ones teaching their children. The students that parents do not teach them the abstinence message need to know how to take care of themselves when they decided to become sexually active. A Zogby poll found that “80% of parents” want schools to “place more emphasis on promoting abstinence over contraceptive use.” (The Christian Post) This statement is a good because it throws out abstinence-only teachings and puts at least some contraceptive teachings in there.

For the kids that do not get an abstinence message from their parents, they need to learn how to protect themselves from getting pregnant and STDs. Even the children that are taught abstinence need to know how to protect themselves when they decide to become sexually active. This makes me think that the real question is, “Why would schools teach abstinence-only sex-ed?”

Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent unintentional pregnancies and getting STDs. Many religions preach that abstinence should be obtained until after marriage.

Teaching abstinence-only sex-ed, would take care of the confusion that rises about safe sex. The safest sex is no sex. Many kids grow up believeing that if they use a condom or take birth control that they will not get pregnant or get an STD. The truth is that neither of those protections have a 100% chance of working. According to Teens Health, “only complete and consistent abstinence can totally prevent pregnancy and protect against STDs.” (Teens Health) Because of the confusion, teaching protection should not be taught. Only abstinence should. Another reason that abstinence-only sex-ed should be taught, is for religious reasons. Haveing sex outside of marriage is commeting adultry, which is one of the Ten Commandments. Teens need to be taught abstinence so that their minds will remain pure and focused on falling into peer pressure and the media. Many church groups perticapate in programs like “Worth the Wait.” (Worth the Wait) These programs teach students to take an oath to remain pure until after marriage. Becuase purity needs to be kept, abstinence-only sex-ed should be taught.

Teaching safe sex sex-ed would cause teens to think that haveing sex before marriage is okay. This is why abstinence-only sex-ed should be taught at schools.

A lot of schools are starting to push the idea of abstinence-only sex-ed. They believe that kids should only be taught to wait until marriage to have sex. Although abstinence is a good idea, safe sex needs to be taught too.

Abstinence is the best way to prevent from getting pregnant and getting a STD, but teaching abstinence-only sex-ed isn’t going to prevent people from getting a STD when they decided to have sex. According to Arthur Caplan of msnbc, “teens who took pledges of virginity as part of abstinence-only sex-ed classes [were] less likely to use contraception [or] other forms of protection when they did become sexually active.” (msnbc.com) Not teaching people how to prevent getting STDs can cause diseases to increase drastically. Teaching contraception would help lower the underage pregnancies and sexual diseases, but Debra Hauser argues that teaching “contraception contradicts [the] message of abstinence-only [teachings.]” (Advocates for Youth) This is why there needs to be a balance between abstinence teachings and comprehensive teachings. This way that people that won’t listen to the abstinence message will know how to protect themselves when they decide to become sexually active.

If schools began teaching a median of abstinence and contraception, things would run more smoothly. There would be less STDs going around and less underage pregnancies. In this way everyone wins.

The day after Thanksgiving is full of bargain shoppers who want to find a great deal for exactly what they want. On Black Friday, the shoppers look long and hard for the merchandise they want. The cheap prices drag a lot of people out of bed just for this one day of shopping. Just like this, experienced readers look for an abundance of rhetorical devices in everyday readings. Just like the wanted items on sell, rhetorical devices are added by authors to draw more people into their works of literature. Great deals are everywhere and so is rhetoric.

The last RSS feed I subscribed for was People’s Weekly World. I subscribed for the Labor RSS feed because it’s a topic I usually was not interested in. After reading some of the articles that interested me by the title, I began to be more interested in the topics. I read Teachers union rolls out new vision for America’s schools, which discussed new ideas for public schools in America. I agree with some of the ideas brought forward, but not all of them would work out very well. I do think that there should be better help for the people who need extra help because after they get out of school what is going to be next for them. I also like how the union that is in charge of the new ideas is lead by three women. I like the way the story is put into many different paragraphs because the article seems more organized in that way. I also read ‘Uniting’ Workers — history in the making. I was very interested in how the CIO was trying to change the working industry for the better. I appreciated how the author kept the story flowing without the article getting complicated.

When I started subscribing to RSS feeds, I subscribed to a variety of different subjects that I would not usually read. I did this to see if some writings are what caused me not to take a liking in the subject. I subscribed to The Onion RSS feed to The War for the White House because I am not usually interested in politics. After reading a few articles about Obama and McCain, I still am not interested in politics even when reading articles by some of the great authors. I figured out that the reason I do not like reading about politics is because a lot of the articles seemed to be about the personal life of the candidates instead of the big topics that should be being discussed. For example in the article, ‘Time’ Publishes Definitive Obama Puff Piece, Obama is asked what his favorite ice cream is. To me that sounds like something a celebrity would be asked. Maybe I just do not understand politics very well, but that could because I have no interest in it. I do not like the structure of the writing of The Onion either because it seems to downgrade the lives of all the politicians. I did not really understand what the point of the article, Clinton Sadly Folds First Lady Dress Back Into Box, had on anything about the campaign. I think telling about Bill Clinton walking around carrying around the dress because he would end up as the ‘First Lady’ if Hilary Clinton won the election seems unnecessary to the whole campaign.

I subscribed to the New York Times RSS feed for Nutrition and Health. I am always interested in the health issues that come up in the USA because we seem to have so many of them for better or worse. When I read the title of an article 60-Plus, Ripped, and Natural Competitors, I was instantly hooked. The title hooked me because who would think that sixty year olds would have muscles and even compete. As I read the article I was very interested that so many elderly people would be in such great shape to be able to take place in a body building competition. I like the way the author, Abby Ellin, kept the writing interesting without making the article to hard to understand. Another article under the New York Times caught my eye at first glance. The article, At Risk: Pot Belly in Midlife Is Liked to Dementia, made me think that there are several everyday things that are seen that can be linked to a diseases and nobody knows bout it. Well you see a middle age man usually they have a potbelly unless they are in good shape, but did you know that a potbelly can lead to brain problems? The way Nicholas Bakalar gets straight to the facts without all the fancy details impresses me because usually writers put more detail in their writing. I also like how the article is not sugar coated. People need to know how something might really end up without it being understated. I am very impressed by the RSS feed of this part of the New York Times. All the feeds that I read interested me where I could not stop reading them.
